Adviser told Prince Andrew to charge £1.2 million a year to 'mingle with Royals' at Swiss ski chalet

After taking out a huge £13.25million mortgage on the property in 2014, Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson are said to have still owed its former landlord a further £5million in cash.

An adviser has told Prince Andrew to charge wealthy clients £1.2million a year to ‘mingle with the Royals’ at the Swiss ski chalet which has become a painful financial millstone for the Duke of York

  • The Helora chalet in Switzerland has become a painful financial problem for Duke of York
  • Prince Andrew and ex-wife Sarah Ferguson allegedly owed former landlord £5m
  • A York councilor has come up with a plan to turn the chalet into a private club
  • The chalet was put on the market last year and would have been sold this year

It has seven bedrooms, an indoor pool, sauna, sun terrace, bar and opulent entertainment area.

But Chalet Helora, far from being a dream vacation home in one of Switzerland’s finest ski resorts, has instead become a painful financial drag on the Duke of York.

After taking out a huge £13.25million mortgage on the property in 2014, Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson would still have owed its former landlord £5million in cash – only in 2019, they had trouble paying.

Today, John Bryan reveals another York councilor has hatched a ‘crazy’ plan to turn the chalet into a private club.

The adviser, an Iranian-born man with links to Azerbaijan, offered to charge wealthy clients £1.2m a year – with the promise they could ‘mingle with the Royals’.

The Yorks ultimately chose not to pursue the proposal. Mr Bryan said: “The sad thing is that the Royal Family is made up of ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ when it comes to finances. Some are very wealthy and others, like Prince Andrew, are always trying to find ways to make money.

‘Andrew was like, “Hey, why don’t you include [the adviser] on one of your calls? This guy was talking about turning the chalet into a super exclusive private club. It was crazy.

“I think Andrew and Sarah considered the plan to appease him, but it came to nothing.”

The Helora chalet was put on the market last year and would have been sold earlier this year. When the Mail on Sunday visited on Friday the property was unoccupied.

The Duke had not been to the luxury pavilion for several years before it was sold, but the Duchess and their two daughters spent last New Year there.
