The court heard that Khanom deliberately started the fire by setting fire to balls of fabric on his sofa.

Two boys passing by on bicycles saw the sofa on fire and reported it to their mother who in turn dialed 999.

Firefighters arrived moments after Khanom was cleared of the building and an explosion blew the front windows.

She pleaded guilty to arson with recklessness as to whether life was in danger, drunken and disorderly behavior and possession of a Class B controlled drug.

Khanom also violated a suspended sentence for using threatening, abusive or insulting language or behavior and being in possession of a bladed item.

She was imprisoned for two years and six months.

Gareth Williams, defending, said Khanom suffered from a personality disorder and PTSD and had used alcohol and drugs, but did not intend to harm anyone with the fire .

Judge Michael Fitton KC told him, “It was a very serious offense, you were responsible for the fire in a residential area where children were playing in the street.

“The risk to other people, not just firefighters and residents, was a significant risk.

“Based on what you’ve been struggling with for some time, the worst thing you can do is use alcohol, cannabis or other drugs as a form of self-medication or treatment.

“It’s a disaster to mix an emotionally unstable personality disorder with alcohol and drugs.”
