EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Mystery over fate of Diana memo exonerating Martin Bashir of wrongdoing for infamous Panorama interview

Princess Diana’s note exonerating Martin Bashir of any wrongdoing in obtaining his Panorama interview was first kept as a memento in program editor Steve Hewlett’s safe, claims the former Panorama journalist Tom Mangold.

Missing for 24 years, he was, Mangold claims in The Critic, “stolen by someone unnamed and brought home”.

He adds that the culprit alerted the BBC in November 2020 and “on the same day someone from the BBC went to his house and collected him”.

Mangold refuses to name the custodian of the note, and Hewlett, who could shed light on the theft, died in 2017’s Deep Waters.

“Why would I want to know that? If he was looking for sex with me, he was definitely barking up the wrong tree.

Evergreen Anne will be 91 in July.

Impressionist Jan Ravens mourns the demise of Liz Truss, who flew back and forth from Downing Street after just one run of Dead Ringers.

“She was a golden opportunity,” Jan told Radio Times. “If only she had held back a little!” It was shameful. It was like she was that little girl her father had always told her was funny.

Liz wasn’t kidding when she entered the record books as the shortest PM president.
