Comedian Frank Skinner returns in time for November’s World Cup with a new version of his England anthem Three Lions – with the Lionesses’ stunning victory at Euro 2022 front and center.
As England prepare for another tilt to end all those years of suffering – this time in the tiny Middle Eastern country of Qatar, Skinner is dusting off the old classic with longtime collaborator Ian Broudie from Lightning Seeds.
Skinner, 65, said he recorded the new track at Broudie’s home studio, and it kicks off with a tribute to the England women’s team after winning the European Championship in July.
Speaking on her Absolute Radio show, Skinner said: “I won’t say where it goes, but it starts like this… ‘Love that the Lionesses win’.
‘And then it goes on from there to remember the failure as well as that great moment.
“We are shooting the video on Thursday.”
Immortalized by England’s ‘almost’ home performance at Euro ’96, the Three Lions’ anthem – and its iconic ‘home football return’ refrain – has serenaded most tournaments football internationals by now.
Frank Skinner returns with a new version of the classic Three Lions football anthem, originally released in 1996
This new version will pay tribute to the heroic England women’s team, who did what the men failed to do for so many years when they won a major tournament earlier this year, beating the German – of all teams – in the final after extra time.

The famous song was written for England’s home tournament at Euro 96. It became a powerful anthem that captured the nation’s imagination and was sung constantly as England qualified for the semi-finals, only to lose again to the Germans on penalties.
The heroic women’s team did what the men failed to do for so many years when they won a major tournament earlier this year, beating the German – of all teams – in the final after extra time .
The winner was scored by Chloe Kelly after Ella Toone broke the deadlock with a sublime lob in the 62nd minute.
But now it will be their turn to cheer on their male counterparts, who they hope have been inspired by what they have achieved.
The title of the famous song comes from the three lions that make up the emblem of the England team.
Skinner’s comedic partner David Badiel, 58, was part of the original trio to perform the song, and he’ll make an appearance in the latest version and contribute his voice again.
An updated version was released for the World Cup in 1998 and both topped the UK charts during summers of football fever.
This year’s World Cup marks a departure from all the others that have come before it, as it will be played in the winter, to offset the murderous temperatures Qatar experiences in the summer.
But the timing is not the only controversy leading the World Cup, as Qatar has been pilloried for its human rights record and the conditions in which migrant labor has worked to build the stadiums.
