Green energy supplier that wants its customers to switch to a rival

The green energy supplier who wants its customers to switch to a competitor: Ecotricity variable tariff not affected by the price cap

A green energy supplier encourages customers in difficulty to switch supplier.

Ecotricity supplies over 200,000 homes across the UK. However, unlike most other companies, its standard variable tariff is not limited by Ofgem’s tariff cap, as its electricity comes from renewable sources.

Last week the supplier wrote to customers saying the average annual bill would rise by £417, from £2,397 to £2,814.

That’s £314 more than a typical household protected by the government’s new energy price guarantee would pay.

In an email sent to customers last week, Dale Vince, chief executive of Ecotricity, suggested that those who cannot afford the rise should move.

He said: “I would much rather anyone struggling to pay that extra amount left us and moved to a capped rate with another provider.”

Joe Malinowski of comparison site The Energy Shop says: ‘It looks like Ecotricity is trying to pass on customers so they can be another company’s problem.

“The question is why would he do this when as producers of renewable energy he should be able to pass the benefits on to customers in the form of savings.”

The provider did not respond to requests for comment.
