The Royal Family website published an updated line of succession yesterday. Although this shows that Archie and Lilibet have risen in line and are sixth and seventh in line to the throne, they will not be known as Prince and Princess.

Harry and Meghan’s children are not listed as Prince and Princess in the updated order of succession released by Buckingham Palace following the Queen’s death.

As grandchildren of the reigning monarch, the children of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are entitled to the titles. But according to the updated order of succession under King Charles III, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, three, and his sister Lilibet, one, are given the titles of “Master” and “Miss”.

During Oprah Winfrey’s explosive interview, Meghan claimed officials denied Archie the title of prince and denied him 24/7 security, before suggesting the decision was due to the fact that he was mixed race.

The Sussexes said in the interview that they expected Archie to become a prince, but were told protocols would be changed in line with Charles’ wish for a lean monarchy.

Under rules set by King George V in 1917, Archie and Lili – as children of a sovereign’s son – would have HRH style if they chose to use it.

The king’s spokesman said the monarch announced William and Kate’s titles as Prince and Princess of Wales and expressed his love for Harry and Meghan in his address to the nation on Friday.

“While the website has been updated for Welsh, it’s clear that updating love on a website doesn’t quite work, so we haven’t quite done that, but he clearly loves them.” We will work on updating the website as we receive information,” he said on Saturday.

The issue of titles was first raised publicly by Meghan in her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.

She said that when she was pregnant with Archie: ‘They were saying they didn’t want him to be a prince or a princess – not knowing what the gender would be – which would be different from protocol.’

Meghan described her ‘pain’ as she claimed officials denied Archie the title of prince and accused Buckingham Palace of failing to protect him by denying him 24/7 security.

When asked if it was “important” to Meghan that Archie be called a prince, she replied that she had no attachment to the “greatness” of official titles.

But she said it was “the idea that our son wasn’t safe, and also the idea that the first colored member of this family doesn’t have the same title as the other little ones. -children”.

In 2021, it was suggested that Charles – in a bid to limit the number of key royals – intended when he became monarch to prevent Archie from becoming a prince.

To do this, he would have to issue letters patent altering Archie’s right to be a prince and Lili’s right to be a princess.

When Archie was born seventh to the throne in May 2019, he was too far down the line of succession.

Although he was a great-grandson of the monarch, he was not the eldest son of a future king, so he was not automatically a prince.

He might previously have used the courtesy title Earl of Dumbarton or been Lord Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

But Buckingham Palace said the Duke and Duchess had personally decided he should be Simple Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor instead.

The Sussexes stopped using their own HRH styles after stepping down as working royals for a life in Los Angeles, and there were later calls for their Duke and Duchess titles to be removed.

What is the George V Convention?

In 1917, the Queen’s grandfather issued new Letters Patent which limited the number of members of the Royal Family holding an HRH title.

These stated that “the children of any sovereign of these kingdoms and the children of the sons of such a sovereign and the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales shall have and hold and enjoy at all times the style, title or attribute of Royal Highness with their titular dignity of Prince or Princess preceded by their respective first names or their other titles of honor”.
