The idyllic Greek Islands have long drawn the rich and famous as holiday hot spots.

And there is one location in particular that has caught A-list attention, a luxurious yet unpretentious haven built into the Mykonos cliff-side overlooking Ornos Bay on the southwest part of the island.

Over the years, the five-star Kivotos Hotel & Villas has hosted a dazzling selection of stars including Shakira and Gerard Piqué, Heidi Klum, John Legend as well as Sex And The City writer Darren Star.

The idea for the chic resort was first sparked in 1993 when the owner was inspired by the image of a French antique mirror resting against a bright white wall.

The original recipe for the beginning of the blissful holiday retreat is still clear to see today, with the white-washed interiors of the property complemented by arty statues, pictures and mirrors.

Combined with first-class amenities, a breathtaking view of the emerald sea and the mountainous landscape above, it is no surprise this Greek gem attracted the royal visitor.

Shakira, 45, and her estranged beau, Gerard, 35, who split earlier this year, stayed at the celebrity getaway during the early days of their relationship and were pictured lounging around the hotel pool.

The former couple were also seen enjoying a day at see aboard the hotel’s private yacht.

In 2014 the famous singer and Oscar winner John Legend enjoyed a getaway at the retreat, which hosted its annual bash in July and was attended by 600 people.

He was accompanied by his wife Chrissy, who he now shares two children with while she is expecting a third baby, on the holiday.

The pool and restaurant area paints the perfect setting for an al fresco bash, boasting an azure infinity pool and floating sunbeds as well as stepping stones across from one side to the other.

If you aren’t suited to the poolside, the hotel also has its own private beach – apparently a rarity in the area – with plush beds and a jetty where the hotel’s boat is docked for guests to hire.

In 2008 the hotel even acquired a private yacht, Prince de Neufchatel, for the same purpose.

Relaxation is the name of the game at Kivotos, and if you aren’t soaking up the rays on their plush day beds or sipping on a cocktail at the swim-up bar, guests can indulge in one of the hotel’s spa treatments.

Their ‘Ultimate Moisturising’ or ‘Soothing’ facial with chamomile ranges from between €60 and €90, Deep tissue massage costs 125€ for 60 minutes and €170 for 90.

The complex has 41 rooms in its entirety, its most prestigious option is known a Noah’s Waterfront Villa, which of course comes with its own private pool AND beach.

The hotel also attracted supermodel Heidi, 49, who has since returned to the island on several occasions, suggesting her stay at Kivotos left a lasting impression.

Heidi most recently returned to Mykonos just last summer in 2021, where she shared a sizzling insight to her trip.

Prince Albert II of Monaco stayed at the boutique hotel in 2014 and can be seen posing in the reception with the proud owners, Philip and Jason Michopoulos.

While it is unclear where Albert II stayed at the resort, the accommodation is certainly fit for a prince with its incredible 150 square meter footage, stunning views and private facilities.

In high season next year the room is quoted at costing £ 2,700 per night.

Kivotos’ most basic option is still a stunning alternative, known as the Junior Suite, it features relaxing neutral and modern decor with views over looking the hotel’s plush gardens.

During the same week in July next year it would cost a more modest £703 per night.

The hotel also offers lunch and dinner which live up to five-star expectations at its Namah restaurant, served by friendly and expertly-trained staff who cater to their guests every whim.

The latest addition to the Kivotos legacy is its sister location in Santorini.

While equally lavish and elegant, there is no denying the different vibe at the brand’s other hotel, as Greek designer Afroditi Bonatsou worked to create a calm and super-contemporary feel.

Mykonos oozes laid-back luxury while Santorini has a slightly more sophisticated, edgy and modern vibe.

The accommodation is also a selection of individual rooms, the best of which is an out of this world cave-style villa complete with its own vast living space, kitchen, spa room, Haman, dressing room and indoor pool/gym.

In peak season next year it is priced at £2,728 per night, while guests have the option of bringing a large group and hiring the Wellness Four Bedroom Villa – which is three connected rooms – for £4,988 a night.

Kivotos Santorini has 30 rooms in total, including eight premium villas which have direct pool access and are muted in colour with wooden and concrete furnishings in tones of grey, offering a natural-looking result.

All of the rooms look out at the Aegean sea are in perfect view of one of the ‘world’s best sunsets’, which quickly sees the area populated with tourists who are keen to catch a glimpse of the moment.

The golden hour is a popular time for guests to dine at Kivotos’ Mavro restaurant, which is situated in a glass balcony surrounded outdoor space and boasts a small but finely-selected menu.

The lunch menu offers a wider variety of options including pasta, burgers and fish dishes, as the restaurant – which is no doubt fine dining by night – transforms into a more cool low-key beach club.

While the resort is yet to posses the celebrity approval of its Mykonos counterpart, it will unquestionably gain a star-studded roster in years to come after only opening in 2019.

For those not content with endlessly gazing at the incredible views from the comfort of a balcony, there is five mile hiking path leads that leads to the villas and famous sunset viewing points in Oia.

There is also the option to travel by bus to the capital of the island, Fira, which is two miles away.

Similar to its Mykonos equivalent, it also offers spa treatments in a candlelit cave-style spa with treatments that include deep tissue; anti-ageing and detox.

This feature was written following an invitation to stay at Mykonos and Santorini Kivotos Hotel & Villas.
