An emotional Kate Garraway broke down as she discussed her husband Derek’s health battle during a Friday appearance on Lorraine.

The Good Morning host, 55, admitted there “is no end point” to his care and his new lifestyle can be “exhausting” for those around him.

Derek is one of Britain’s worst Covid patients after being admitted to hospital with the virus in March 2020, only returning to the family’s London home in April 2021, where he receives round-the-clock care 24.

She told host Lorraine Kelly: “And the thing is, when it’s a long battle like with Derek, there’s no end to it and it can be exhausting for the people around me as well.”

“I know sometimes people say ‘oh, she’s still talking about it’, but what I’ve learned is that you don’t really know what it feels like if you’re there.”

Before adding: ‘And now I am contacted by thousands and thousands of people who make me feel less alone’.

Kate joined co-host Ben Shephard to discuss ITV’s GMB Loneliness campaign and took the opportunity to thank him for his unwavering support.

Ben teased: ‘Kate is so amazing in the way she juggles all these balls in her life. I go to her house and my instinct is to put everything in the trash and get rid of all the bric-a-brac she drags in there”.

Kate replied: “Well, all jokes aside and as cheeky as he gets, has been amazing”.

It comes after Kate thanked her husband Derek as she won her second best auteur documentary award at the National Television Awards last month.

The broadcaster fought back tears as it accepted the gong for its documentary, Caring For Derek.

She won the award last year for her first documentary, Finding Derek, which focused on Derek’s battle for health after he was first hospitalized with the coronavirus.

Accompanied by her 16-year-old daughter Darcey on stage, Kate said Derek was still “fighting” after his brief return to hospital with sepsis.

She said: ‘Well, I really didn’t expect that. So the mercy of that is that it’s going to be brief because I have very little preparation.

“I have my daughter here, Darcey. Darcey represents the whole family. We managed to talk to Derek, he’s back in the hospital right now, fighting so incredibly. We hope he will come home soon.

She continued, “I want to thank Derek for his incredible fighting spirit, we love you. I want to thank ITV for being so brave to put something that’s really touched in all the amazing documentaries, about care.

“We have a care crisis in our country, but we don’t have a love crisis. The professional carers are amazing, the millions of people caring for those they love are amazing.

“And I think that’s probably why you voted for it, because you know it’s all of you.” We all feel alone, we all need care and love.

“So thank you very much, it means the world to all these people. Thanks a lot.’

Caring For Derek won against stiff competition from Katie Price: What Harvey Did Next, Tom Parker: Inside My Head, Julia Bradbury: Breast Cancer and Me, and Paddy and Christine McGuinness: Our Family and Autism.
