A man has died after being crushed by a hydraulic urinal in London’s West End this afternoon, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 1.10pm at the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road outside the Palace Theater in London’s theater district, after reports of an industrial accident involving a public urinal.
The London Ambulance Service said: ‘Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of our crews, one man has died at the scene.
An air ambulance was seen landing in Trafalgar Square while a large number of ambulances and fire engines rushed to the scene.
A crane was brought to the scene in an attempt by rescuers to lift the entire device off the ground.

‘The man is believed to have suffered crush injuries while working on a ‘telescopic urinal’ at the scene.
“The LFB, the LAS and the London Air Ambulance are present. Officers help with road closures.
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: ‘We were called at 1.05pm today (27 January) to reports of an incident on Shaftesbury Avenue, Charing Cross.
“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance team, members of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), members of our Tactical Response Unit and a medic in a car. rapid intervention. We also dispatched the Air Ambulance from London.
“The incident is still ongoing.”

The incident happened near the Palace Theatre, where Harry Potter and the Cursed Child takes place.

Telescopic urinals are pop-up installations that rise from the pavement for those going out in London at night
The incident happened outside the Palace Theatre, where the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child show is taking place.
Currently, the theater does not know if the 7 p.m. performance will take place tonight.
A spokesperson for the theater’s stage doors department said: ‘At this point we don’t have the information to give people and it’s an ongoing situation. We will try to give as much notice as possible’
London Fire Brigade told MailOnline: ‘Firefighters were called to a person trapped on Charing Cross Road in central London.
“The man trapped below street level under a hydraulic urinal in Cambridge Circus has been freed. He was taken into the care of the ambulance service.
“The brigade was called at 1:05 p.m. Four fire engines and approximately 25 firefighters from Soho, Euston and Dowgate fire stations are at the scene.”
