Neil Patrick Harris to reprise his role of Barney Stinson in second season of How I Met Your Father

Neil Patrick Harris has been confirmed to reprise his beloved role as Barney Stinson in upcoming episodes of Hulu’s How I Met Your Father, Deadline reported.

The 49-year-old actor, who originally played the “serial twins” character for a total of nine seasons on How I Met Your Mother, made a surprise appearance in the spin-off’s season 2 premiere. off which aired on Tuesday.

The exciting news of the star’s retaliation comes shortly after reports that his Netflix series Uncoupled would not be renewed following the release of the first season last year in July.

Much to the delight of fans, Neil made a surprise appearance near the end of the first episode of the second season of How I Met Your Father.

After a year-long hiatus, young Sophie, played by Hilary Duff, could be seen leaving a panicked message for her mother, Lori, stating, “I think I’m dating my dad!”

Distracted, Duff ends up crashing into the back of the car. She jumps as the other driver slowly exits, the suspense building as the camera slowly rises from the feet to suddenly reveal Neil casually adjusting his suit.

After a brief moment of glancing at his car, he shouts “Dude!” just as the rear bumper of his beloved Audi falls into the street.

Although his cameo was short, TV Line reported that the Emmy winner will make more appearances during the 20-episode second season.

During a recent interview with the publication, series creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger spoke about Neil’s role in the spinoff.

“We did a creative zoom with him to talk about what we thought, and that was it. He was in, which was so amazing to us. It was the best way we could imagine coming back,’ Elizabeth had explained of offering the idea to Harris, adding that the actor also had ‘a pre-existing relationship with Hilary Duff.’

Regarding the question of whether Neil’s character, Barney, could be Sophie’s father, Isaac confirmed that he was not.

The show’s creators didn’t provide too many details about his role in the spin-off series, but did reveal, “…we’ll learn more about Barney’s situation, but it will also have a major impact on the trajectory and main narrative of our season.

Barney Stinson, however, wasn’t the first How I Met Your Mother original character to star in the spin-off.

In the Hulu show’s first season, Cobie Smulders was seen onscreen again as she returned to her role as Robin Scherbatsky.

In the CBS series, which aired from 2005 until its finale in 2014, the characters of Neil and Cobie were married, but later divorced. For her role on the show, Harris was nominated for a total of four Emmys, and her character has become a fan favorite.

During an interview with GQ early last year, the Series Of Unfortunate Events actor opened up about playing Barney.

Neil, who is currently married to David Burtka, admitted to the publication that when he went to audition he “didn’t think” he was going to be offered the part.

However, after performing a “laser tag scene” and humorously recalling that he “had played a dishwashing role and, like, knocking on their desk”, he was offered to play Barney Stinson.

“I thought it would just be the pilot and it would never go because of the title. Who names a show, ‘How did I meet your mother?’ There aren’t even any rhymes,” he joked. “And then he kept trucking.”

Further emphasizing his character, Neil said “Barney was like a crazy, delirious monkey head”, later adding that it was a “great gig”. Did it for nine years, loved it.

Details of which episodes Harris will appear in during the Hulu spin-off have not been revealed, but the creators have hinted that Barney Stinson will play a pivotal role in the season’s development.

“This car accident becomes a major turning point in Sophie’s life and in her season-long arc,” Isaac teased to TV Line. “Once we catch up on that, I think people will be pleasantly surprised by how his story spins through Barney.”
