Pensioner was left trapped inside her house by cars parked in a bay across her front gate

Carol Tabere, 75, said a parking space inches from her front door meant vehicles would keep her out of her home in Withington, Manchester.

A pensioner was left ‘trapped’ inside her home after cars parked in a bay that stretched across her front door.

Carol Tabere, 75, said a parking space inches from her front door meant vehicles would keep her out of her home in Withington, Manchester.

Additionally, the lack of a sidewalk just outside her home made it difficult for her to leave the Hill Street premises to walk her dog or go shopping.

Ms Tabere said the parking space had now been painted over with double yellow lines, after complaining to Manchester City Council.

Carol Tabere, 75, said a parking space inches from her front door meant vehicles would keep her out of her home in Withington, Manchester.

The space was among other bays that had been introduced as part of the Christie parking scheme.

However, following feedback from residents, its most recent expansion has now been shelved for review.

The council also confirmed that the bay had in recent weeks been painted with double yellow lines outside its house as part of “repair work”, but previous images show how the cars had to park in front. door inside designated bay.

Ms Tabere, who suffers from angina and narcolepsy and can no longer drive, expressed annoyance at the scheme.

The pensioner, who has lived in her home for 31 years, said: “I wasn’t pedantic and complaining for fun, but I don’t have a sidewalk in front of my house, so when the cars were parked There was no way I could get out there, I was trapped.

“I told them (the council) to send someone over to have a look. People were coming and parking and every time I opened my door I was like “oh no, not yet”. I was constantly going out and putting notes on people’s cars asking them not to park there. I know it was a fringed bay, but common sense would tell you it’s right outside someone’s door.

“My son had said if the paramedics needed to get into the house they couldn’t do it, or if the house were to catch fire I would have been trapped,” she told Manchester Evening News .

The Residents Parking Zone (RPZ) was first implemented in 2015 to address the impact of parking on the surrounding residential areas.

However, this caused displaced parking issues in the wider Withington neighborhood, coupled with the expansion staff and visitor numbers at the hospital, prompting the expansion.

“People didn’t think they were doing anything wrong because it was a parking space. I had to tell people they were blocking my way, and one man even insulted me when I asked him to move and called me an ‘old b***’, she added .

“There were days when I was trying to get my dog out and I had to walk past cars and drag him along the hedge.

“The council could have put the spaces across the road where there is a pavement and no houses. But instead, people come and break down their doors in my hedge.

“It was a nightmare, but when they took the space away I was thrilled because I could finally get out of my house.”

Despite the fact that the bay in front of her door has been removed, Carol says the bays higher up are still so close to her garden hedge, that cars are now forced to scrape along her privet.

A spokesperson for Manchester City Council said: “Earlier this year council advised residents near the new resident parking area that its roll-out was on hold following community feedback.

“In the case of this resident, repair work has been carried out to put in place double yellow lines in front of their property to prevent future parking.”
