Residents furious over 65ft 5G mast built 'within touching distance' of gardens

Furious residents were outraged after coming home from work to discover a towering 5G mast resembling a ‘rocket’ in their cul-de-sac with no ‘warning’.

Neighbors in the village of Balderstone, Rochdale, said they were ‘extremely disappointed’ not to have been informed of the installation of the 65ft structure, a stone’s throw from their home.

Mother Clare Brophy said she ‘nearly had a heart attack’ when she came home from work one afternoon to find the flagpole sticking up on the other side of her garden fence.

Another resident, Amy Openshaw, told the Manchester Evening News: ‘It’s not nice to watch. When you’re in the rooms at the top of the stairs, it’s there, in your face.

“We literally went to work and came home and there it was.

“I’ll probably say more when all the leaves start to fall, I’ll see it a lot more then.”

“There’s a lot of open space where he could have gone, rather than literally there.”

Rochdale Council refused planning permission for the facility in March last year because it would ‘represent an incongruous and dominant feature’ near homes.

Clare said she “almost had a heart attack” when she returned home to find the structure, which she said looks like a “rocket”.

But the decision was overturned and residents are furious after coming home from work to find the ‘monstrosity’ within touching distance of their gardens.

Ms Openshaw said she was powerless to stop it and joked: ‘Unless I go in there and try to take it out myself.’

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told the publication that he was ‘not a NIMBY’ but wished he had better communication on the post.

“I came home from work to find this monstrosity had been erected at the back of my property,” they said.

“We are extremely disappointed and angry that we were not given the opportunity to appeal this decision.”

“There are other places in the same area where it could have caused less obstruction to neighboring properties,” they added.

“Unfortunately I’m aware it had to go somewhere and they’re an eyesore wherever they go.”

Ange and Lee Shepherd, who live on the same road as Claire, said they weren’t as bothered by the mast, but would have liked to have had advance warning.

“To be honest, the only things that ever bothered us was when they were doing all the work and I had trouble getting my car in and out,” Ms Shepherd said.

“But the only place we can really see it from is the back bedroom.

‘It doesn’t really bother me, but I can understand why. But that’s the price to pay for progress, isn’t it?

She added that they had received no notice of the erection of the mast, but had been angered by the construction noise preceding it, saying they had made a “good racket”.

“So the next thing I knew, it was there,” she said.

“For us, it is not a horror. It’s not really a problem. There are many trees on the way.

Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd said he would contact the government ministers responsible for the Planning Inspectorate to ask them to “urgently” look into the matter.

“No one should come home to find such a monstrosity with seemingly totally inadequate consultation and no consideration for the view from their home,” he said.

Cornerstone said it understands its mobile infrastructure impacts communities and “places a high priority on minimizing the visual impact” of its equipment.

“We aim to ensure they blend into the region as much as possible while enabling quality digital connectivity to the communities we serve,” the company said in a statement.

“Cornerstone has proposed a base station at Balderstone, Rochdale, to provide essential network connectivity including 5G services to the region.

‘Unfortunately the proposed base station was refused by the local planning authority [the council].

“Following this refusal, we considered all our options, but concluded that the proposed site remained the best option locally.

“A planning call was put forward and eventually cleared.

“The site has now been developed and the screening provided by adjacent trees will minimize views from the proposal to much of the local area.”
