“I think it all stems from one element, working hard on the basics. He didn’t look happy for a while, when you have a smiling Marcus Rashford, he’s a devastating player and a game-changer,’ Ferdinand said on BBC One.

‘One on one, he looks scary, he can finish. It all grew out of practicing basic football principles, hard work and corruption. The great players of this tournament will go to see Marcus Rashford.

His two-goal outing at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium allowed Rashford to take his fine form at club level with Man United – where he has scored eight goals this season – onto the international stage, as England pressed against a lackluster Wales team.

The Premier League’s all-time top scorer Alan Shearer echoed similar sentiments in his post-game goal analysis as he raved about Rashford’s ‘wonderful free-kick’, insisting that his outstanding performance gave Southgate options in attack.

“That was a wonderful strike, I was sitting here saying to strike from the goalkeeper side. The keeper is at fault here, that’s a great strike.

“There’s no point in having a wall if you don’t trust him. Very good from Marcus but the keeper should do better.

‘Saka, Sterling, Grealish, so many manager options. When you get the chance, you have to go out and play and he did. Great for us and the fans,” Shearer added.
