Vegetarians are angry at a recipe change for popular meatless brand Cauldron sausages to make the snacks suitable for vegans.

Speaking to UK parenting forum Mumsnet, a woman asked users if they had noticed any changes with Cauldron’s Lincolnshire sausages.

She claimed they were the ‘best on the market’ but said they were ‘ruined’ and are now ‘Awful Flabby Plastic Tasting Tubes.’

Many users agreed with her, with a post that they were ‘disappointing’ and coated in too much black pepper.

Another added: “They are awful now. The texture is horrible and they look like extruded porridge.

A third said: “Okay, they’re awful now and it’s happening with more and more products. In catering for vegans, some businesses are pushing away vegetarian customers.

While a fourth wrote: “I bought a pack yesterday. I couldn’t even get them out of the package because they’re not so much “sausages” as “tubes of brown porridge”. The texture and structure are just plain wrong.

A fifth user suggested vegetarians try Richmond’s meatless sausages after claiming they were the ‘best’ on the market.

A sixth said: ‘I had one recently and thought it had been stored incorrectly because it just wasn’t right. I didn’t realize it was a new recipe.

While a seventh added: ‘I agree!! We have been so disappointed with them recently. They were the best. My vegan friends don’t like them either!

And one end user said: “Disappointing news, but thanks for the warning. Cauldron was the best.

Cauldron Foods has removed the eggs from its vegetarian Lincolnshire and Cumberland sausages, making them vegan for the first time.

On an Instagram post on New Year’s Eve, the UK-based company confirmed that it had stripped all dairy ingredients from its recipes.

The ad was met with backlash on social media, with one commenter saying it ‘destroyed the best veggie sausage on the market’.

A second added: “Please go back to the old recipe!” The new recipe is horrible – the texture and taste are really poor.

While a third put: ‘Please go back to the old recipe. I would buy at least one package of Cumberland veggie sausages a week. I won’t be buying any more with the new recipe.
