A San Francisco court has released the shocking police body camera footage showing the moment Paul Pelosi was violently attacked with a hammer in his home in October.
Paul, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was sleeping at the couple’s San Francisco home in the early hours of October 28 when David DePape, 42, broke in and beat him with a hammer, according to the prosecutors.
The video shows two police officers arriving at the Pelosi’s home, knocking on the door and waiting about 20 seconds before answering.
Paul, in a pajama top and boxer shorts, opens the door as DePape and the former speaker’s husband argue over control of a hammer. Both hold the weapon in their right hands.
An officer asks, “What’s going on man?” There is an inaudible response from someone inside the house.
The officer says, “Drop the hammer. Afterwards, Paul attempts to twist the hammer out of DePape’s hand, when the suspect regains control of the weapon he begins to strike multiple times.
The two cops rush in and tackle DePape, yelling, “Give me your fucking hands.” Eventually they hold the striker back as Paul Pelosi lies on the ground.
In the aftermath of the attack, Paul Pelosi required surgery for a skull fracture in two places and was treated for serious injuries to his right arm and hands.
The release comes following the order of Judge Stephen M. Murphy on Wednesday, who ruled there was no legal reason to keep the footage private, against prosecutors’ wishes.
Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill earlier this week, Pelosi said she would find it “very difficult” to watch the footage of the attack.
The California Democrat said: ‘I mean, it would be very hard to see an assault on my husband’s life.

The video and audio have already been released in open court during a preliminary hearing against DePape in December.
During that hearing, prosecutors released excerpts from Paul Pelosi’s 911 call, along with footage from Capitol police surveillance cameras, body cameras worn by the two officers who arrived at the home, and video of DePape’s interview with the police.
San Francisco-based attorney Thomas Burke disagreed with earlier decisions not to release the video and audio.
He told The Associated Press, “You’re not taking away the right of public access just because of concerns about conspiracy theories.”
Asked about her husband’s prognosis on Thursday, Nancy Pelosi told reporters: “It’s one day at a time.” He has made progress but it will take another three months, I think, before he returns to normal.
Last week, the couple’s daughter, Alexandra, revealed in an interview that her mother had held exorcisms at the family home over Thanksgiving following the attack in a bid to rid the house of evil spirits.
DePape pleaded not guilty last month to six counts, including attempted murder. Police say DePape told them there was “evil in Washington” and that he wanted to hurt Nancy Pelosi because she was second in line to the presidency.
His case is pending.
The Democrats lost their majority in the House of Representatives after the midterm elections. Republicans elected Republican Representative from California to the United States, Kevin McCarthy, as their new president. Pelosi will remain in Congress, but she has resigned as Democratic leader. She was replaced by Hakeem Jeffries from New York.
