Woman convicted of killing a woman to take her unborn baby

A jury in Bowie County, northeast Texas, deliberated for about an hour before finding Taylor Rene Parker, 29, guilty of the October 2020 murder of Reagan Michelle Simmons-Hancock, 21, and the abduction of her newborn daughter.

A Texas woman faces the death penalty after being convicted of capital murder on Monday for killing a pregnant woman to take her unborn baby.

A jury in Bowie County, northeast Texas, found Taylor Rene Parker, 29, guilty of the October 2020 murder of Reagan Michelle Simmons-Hancock, 21, and the kidnapping of her severed daughter. her womb who later died.

The verdict by a jury of six men and six women came after three weeks of sometimes grisly testimony, during which the court heard Parker beat Simmons-Hancock in the head at least five times before “cutting his abdomen, hip to hip”.

Simmons-Hancock, who was 34 weeks pregnant with Braxlynn Sage, was stabbed more than 100 times by Parker before being left to die in front of her three-year-old daughter. The jury deliberated for about an hour before returning its guilty verdict.

Parker’s attorneys argued that the baby was never alive and decided to dismiss a kidnapping charge, which would have reduced the capital murder charge to murder.

Parker, a mother of two, had a hysterectomy and was therefore unable to have any more children, but continued to fake that she had conceived for fear that Griffin would break up with her.

“That’s why in the opening statements we spent so much time on definitions. You can’t kidnap a person who wasn’t born alive,” said Jeff Harrelson in his closing argument before the jury.

Prosecutors, however, said multiple medical professionals said the baby had a heartbeat when it was born. They also recounted Parker’s actions leading up to the day Simmons-Hancock was killed.

“We methodically explained what she (Parker) did, why she did it, all the moving parts and all the collateral damage. The best evidence the state of Texas has that the baby was born alive is that Taylor Parker said it wasn’t,’ prosecutor Kelley Crisp said.

Prosecutor Lauren Richards recounted all the charades Parker performed for different people, including the pregnancy she faked before the murder.

Authorities have recounted how Parker was so terrified of losing her boyfriend Wade Griffin that she faked a pregnancy for nearly 10 months.

She was already a mother of two, but had had a hysterectomy, meaning she was unable to have any more children.

She faked ultrasounds, threw a gender reveal party and posted on social media about her fake pregnancy while searching for a victim.

“In the past two weeks, the evidence has never been clearer,” Assistant District Attorney Lauren Richards told the jury. “She’s a liar, a manipulator, and now she’s going to be held accountable.”

She reminded the jury how Reagan was beaten in the head at least five times with such force that the blows compressed his skull in his brain.

She stabbed and cut Reagan, who was 34 weeks pregnant with Braxlynn Sage, more than 100 times.

“The pain Reagan must have felt when Taylor started cutting his abdomen, hip to hip … indescribable,” Richards said.

“When Taylor had the baby and Reagan was still alive, that’s when Taylor started cutting and cutting. She can’t leave her alive. It was not a quick death. She kept cutting it off. Guess Reagan wouldn’t die fast enough for Taylor to get out of there and continue with his plans.

Parker then left Reagan, with whom she had been friends, to die in front of her three-year-old daughter.

She drove alone with the baby in her lap and tucked the placenta into her own pants to make it look like she had given birth as the umbilical cord was still attached.

Parker was arrested by a state trooper around 9:37 a.m. and could be seen performing CPR on the infant before being taken to hospital.

When questioned by officers, Parker admitted she did not give birth to the child and said she assaulted Reagan before abducting the child.

Parker told her then-boyfriend, Wade Griffin, that she needed to be induced to have their child on the day of the murder.

Griffin told officers he was to meet her at the hospital for the birth of their child around lunchtime.

Witnesses also claimed Parker offered $100,000 for a surrogate after he lied to Griffin about her pregnancy.

The punishment phase is due to begin on October 12.

Prosecutors are asking for the death penalty, although jurors could opt for a life sentence without parole.
